I draped the pattern for this on my dress form. I like the examples of asymmetry that I've found in both Victorian fashion plates and some of my favorite steampunk costumes, so I chose to place my buttons a little unconventionally. I still have to add a few hooks and eyes underneath the buttons to help hold the waistcoat closed.
The asymmetry is interesting, I didn't realize ti had a historical precedent.
I like asymmetry, too. Why not loops to hold the buttons closed?
I already had some loops, but I was unhappy with the gapping that I imagined I was getting due to the spacing of the buttons. I wore the dress today and got a lot of compliments, so the problem may not be as bad as I thought. Heh!
